As AI continues to change the world of creative content creation, no area of film and video production has been more impacted by artificial intelligence than video editing.

And, for many editors, creators, and producers looking to improve their editing skills and speed up their workflows, these AI tools have already proven to be innovative and helpful.

While we’ve already covered some of the best AI tools for video editing (as well as some of the best AI tools for audio editing), we need to hyper-focus on the myriad AI-powered tools currently offered in Adobe Premiere Pro.

For many content creators and seasoned video editing professionals, Premiere Pro is still very much the de facto standard for video editing. And thanks to Adobe’s push into AI with their Firefly project, there are actually perhaps more AI tools in Premiere Pro than any other video editing software out there.

So, if you’re looking to level up your video editing skills and workflows with AI tools, here are all the AI features you need to utilize in Premiere Pro.

Generative Extend

The first of the AI tools for Premiere Pro worth exploring is Generative Extend. This is perhaps one of the most powerful AI features in Premiere Pro as it allows editors and content creators the ability to make their shots longer than what they actually recorded.

This tool uses all types of technologically advanced generative AI for video and can truly be a game changer for editors, as you’ll have access to footage you’ve never had access to before.

Object Addition and Object Removal

These new AI-based smart masking and tracking tools should make selecting moving objects over time much easier and faster than ever. Users can combine this tool with the Object Addition and Object Removal tools, which will now allow editors to replace moving objects in a shot, remove unwanted items like boom mics or stray coffee cups, or quickly add set dressings such as a painting or a photorealistic flower vase on a desk.

Scene Edit Detection

Similar to the Generative Extend tool, Premiere Pro also offers an AI feature where you can create a new edit of a longer video by separating it back into the original shorter clips as the first step. Finding the scene transitions and placing these cuts manually can be tedious, but with Scene Edit Detection, Premiere Pro will automatically cut your scenes for you.

All you have to do is right-click a clip on your timeline, select Scene Edit Detection, and choose whether you’d like to add cuts, create a new sub-clip bin, or place clip markers at each cut point.

Generative B-Roll

Do you want to spend less time hunting for b-roll shots in stock footage and use simple text prompts to generate video clips that are just right for your story? With this Generative B-Roll tool, Premiere Pro uses Adobe generative AI to create a shot that illustrates a difficult-to-shoot or fantastical concept, generate B-roll that’s hard to source, or craft placeholders to assist with planning and pacing.

Text-Based Editing

AI has also now unlocked another entire editing system. Text-based editing is a new phenomenon powered by AI that allows users to auto-generate your transcript highlight text to add clips to your timeline—which you can then refine, reorder, and trim clips just like you’d edit a text doc. For further refinement, clear all awkward pauses with bulk deletion and use filler-word detection to remove unwanted filler words.

AI Audio Category Tagging

Another cool new AI feature is an AI Audio Category Tagging tool that lets AI automatically recognize if your clips are music, dialogue, sound effects, or ambiance. It also adds an interactive badge. From there, you just click the badge to get instant access to the most relevant tools for that audio type.

Speech to Text

As its name suggests, speech-to-text is another AI feature found in Premiere Pro, which allows users to create captions and transcripts in a non-time-consuming way. This feature automatically generates accurate transcripts in over 18 languages, distinguishes between speakers, and creates captions matching the video's cadence and speech patterns. Adding captions makes your videos more accessible and engaging on social media, where many users watch content without sound.

Enhance Speech

We’ve covered some AI audio plugins and features in the past, but Adobe’s Enhance Speech tool in Premiere Pro is truly one of the best for letting AI improve the quality of your audio. With this tool, you can easily remove distracting background noise and improve the quality of your dialogue with AI-powered Enhance Speech to make your dialogue sound as if it were recorded in a professional studio.

Auto Color

Color editing and grading are other areas in which AI is making major strides, and if you’d like to apply color corrections in just a few clicks, you can try it with smart Auto Color features. Make basic corrections like exposure, contrast, and white balance faster than ever. Polish your footage in the time it takes to move a slider and hit play. Then, get down to the work of creative color grading.

Color Match

Similarly, you can also easily match the colors in two different video clips in your sequence with Color Match. This helps eliminate discrepancies between the colors in different shots of the same scene. Correct for saturation, white balance, and brightness between different takes, and weave separate shots into a single, unified scene. Maintain a set look for your footage, and enable Face Detection to pay special attention to skin tones and expressions.

Morph Cut

Morph Cut is another cool transition tool that allows users to add visual continuity and help clips flow seamlessly from one to another. Clean up awkward pauses or choppy cuts in interviews or talking head videos with an advanced combination of face tracking and optical flow interpolation. This smooths transitions and adds visual continuity. Make it all come together with transitions that look like one smooth take.

Remix

Suppose you want to keep your soundtrack and visuals on the beat. This Remix tool allows you to retime music to match the timing of your video as you edit. Instead of spending hours manually syncing video and audio, tap into the power of AI to keep what’s on screen and what’s coming out of the speakers aligned, all while preserving the impact of the soundtrack.

Auto Ducking

Auto-ducking is a cool AI feature too which can help ensure that your dialogue and background audio are in perfect harmony. Manually adjusting background sound levels whenever someone is speaking takes a lot of time. Auto Ducking automatically creates audio keyframes that lower music and sound effects during dialogue. Then, those same features bring the soundtrack back up when no one’s talking.

Auto Reframe

Finally, as we all know, a horizontal 16:9 aspect ratio is a common default for many cameras and devices. However, the vertical 9:16 aspect ratio is popular on social platforms. Changing from one to the other can require time-consuming keyframe motion edits to keep moving subjects visible.

Auto Reframe is an awesome new tool that solves this by instantly identifying the focal point of action in your shots and keeping it visible as you change aspect ratios. This is especially handy if you’ve created a wide video but want to post a clip on social media platforms formatted for square or tall aspect ratios, like Instagram or TikTok.
