Photographer Kaitlin Dunn goes to Iceland

This is Kaitlin Dunn. She is a photographer and web store administrator for Sisters of Nature, an online clothing boutique. She also has been a part of the Soundstripe family for a couple years as a designer, explorer, and friend. Here is her travel diary of her adventure to Iceland she just recently returned from.

I had wanted to travel to Iceland for years. I had seen so many photos of landscapes that didn’t seem real, anddddd I was also dying to see puffins in real life (they’ve been my favorite animal for forever). Finally this year, my roommate Aimee and I decided to just go for it, and I was so stoked. I really wanted this trip to be special and creatively inspiring for me, so I decided to shoot everything on 35mm film for the trip.

We flew into the town of Reykjavik, which is one of the main towns in Iceland. We were exhausted, so naturally our first stop was to Reykjavik Roasters (which we ended up going to almost every day). This coffee shop is so great. The coffee is incredible, and the people are so nice! Every time we went there we saw this same couple, and ended up chatting with them every time. They were from Slovenia, and living in Iceland. I asked if I could take a couple photos of them, and they graciously obliged.

The town of Reykjavik is just really fun. It’s right on the water and is beautiful. There are so many restaurants, music venues, and shops; the night life was great! We wandered all over and ended up finding some really cool live music, and the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. We also got to go on a boat trip to “Puffin Island,” and I fulfilled my dream of seeing puffins in real life!

One of my favorite places we went on this trip was to the Blue Lagoon. It’s a natural geothermal hot spring that they have turned into a spa, and it’s incredible. I had never seen anything like it!

We took a day trip to Vik, which was so cool. It ended up taking us so long to get there, just because we made so many (very worthwhile) stops along the way! We stopped at two different waterfalls, made friends with some Icelandic horses, explored a glacier, and hung out at Reynisfjara, which is one of the famous black sand beaches of Iceland.

We brought some items from Sisters of Nature with us-- Aimee modeled them and I photographed them. It was so awesome getting to see some of these pieces in such dramatic landscapes.

Another part of our trip was going to Akureyri, a small town about 5 hours from Reykjavik. It was a long drive through the mountains, but totally worth it. We stayed in the Backpackers Hostel (in Reykjavik we stayed in Air BnB’s) and it was so cool. There were people there from all over the world, and the hostel was definitely the social hub of the town. I loved exploring the little town. We walked by the water, found the best coffee and apple cake, and also made a little road trip to Godafoss, which was the most beautiful, majestic waterfall I have ever seen.

Iceland is an incredible country, and this is a trip I will always remember. I feel like photos don’t even do it justice, so I would highly recommend going and experiencing it for yourself!
